Kent based kart racer Ollie Varney is celebrating after winning the Kent Championships and is being tipped as a future Formula One star.
The Kent Championship was a championship between two tracks in Kent, Bayford meadows in Sittingbourne and Buckmore Park in Maidstone and lasted over six rounds which started in April.
Having originally raced in the national rounds, sponsorship has been a problem for the Kent karter, but he is hoping success at Kent level will see him race at the British Championships next year:
“The championship went very well for me, my target was to have a consistent championship finishing inside the top six in all rounds which I achieved. I had two wins, two second places which put me into the lead and a fourth and a six. I led the championship points from the start.”
“The last race this weekend all went smoothly. I came second in the final, there were a few moments where I could have made a move and have taken the lead, however I did not want to risk it causing an accident and throwing away my chance of winning the championship. I will recieve my trophy in February at an awards evening which I am really looking forward to already.”
“This is the first year I have done something like this, as I am used to doing national competition. I was offered a chance by Team Evolution Racing and (in association with) Team Praga Uk to test a brand new racing Italian kart called the Praga. They wanted me to race the kart in the championship to promote it to others. It was really enjoyable and was something different to what I’ve done in the past.”
“I was undertaking this challenge with a brand new kart so we underwent a lot of testing with the team to make sure we were well prepared. The kart exceeded expectations from the start.”
“I’ve driven many different types of kart over the years but this kart has been the best I’ve ever tried and definitely contributed to my success in the Kent Championship.”
“My plans now is to take the kart to success in the annual London Cup race meeting at Rye House Kart circuit in Hoddesden at the end of this month to show people the kart is not just a one trick pony when it comes to racing in Kent. Racing the praga in bigger competitions next year however is likely to depend on gaining sponsorship.”
